Laurel started her working career in the food industry working for Watties, Heinz-Watties and McCains.  She spent 25 years at the same site, with 15 of those as Site Delegate.  Laurel then became an Organiser for the EPMU in 2004.  That led into the role of Lead Organiser for Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and New Plymouth in which she oversaw a team of Organisers.

She lives in the Manawatu and is married with two teenagers.
